POVERTY REDUCTION

It takes a community to make a difference. Join our community on social to learn how you can create positive, powerful, and meaningful impacts in Vancouver's poverty reduction.

ABOUT POVERTY REDUCTION

Poverty in Vancouver continues to get worse despite our best efforts. There's been major layoffs spanning across most sectors, university students are eating at food banks, and tent cities can be found in every neighbourhood.

In 2018, the Province of British Colombia created the first Poverty Reduction Strategy called TogetherBC. The Strategy was informed by an independent advisory board and set ambitious goals to reduce overall poverty in B.C. by 25% and child poverty by 50% by 2024. Commendable progress has been made towards these targets. At the same time, homelessness rose 11.5% between 2018 and 2021 (BC Housing 2021 Report on Homeless Count). Everyone is doing their best and yet so much more is possible if there is connection, clarity and opportunity for all stakeholders to engage.

Poverty will not be solved by providing enough housing or employment opportunities. People who use drugs are more than addicts. People facing homelessness are not simply lazy. This is a complex problem. It is the type of community problem that is only overcome when all stakeholders, including citizens, work together with curiosity, compassion and openness.
